Description
Oil on canvas painting of a landscape scene. Multiple barns and outbuildings visible in the middleground, painted in shades of red, purple, and pink. Field of grass in pinks and greens in the foreground, with trees and rolling hills in the background stretching towards a sky of greens and whites. Signed at lower left, "ADELAIDE DEMING." Painting framed in gilt wood frame with incised decoration around interior. On reverse, paper label affixed to stretcher, "Old Barns at Litchfield/Artist: Adelaide Deming/Litchfield, Conn." in ink with pencil above "Switzers" and below "Possibly to Mrs. Lindt." In pencil on upper stretcher, "Perkins."
Comment
Adelaide Deming was an artist and educator working largely in New York, although she kept a residence in Litchfield. She studied at the Art Students League and with artists like William Merritt Chase. She taught at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1902 to 1910. Deming was a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the Paint and Clay Club of New Haven, the Kent Art Association, the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors, and the American Watercolor Society.
