Description
Small oil on board painting executed in shades of gray, black, and white. The scene is of Latin Hill in Northfield. The top portion of a roof can be seen in the lower right corner with trees across the mid-ground, and a series of fences leading up the hill to a house. The point of view that this painting was executed from was a window in the Congregational parsonage, and the painting only depicts what was visible through one pane of glass.
Comment
A handwritten note is attached to the revers of the frame and reads, "Painted in 1862 or 1863 by Augustus Mather who died at the age of 17 not long after. It was given to Deacon James Smith and his wife Sally, who later gave it to Pierpont Camp, the owner of Lattin Hill, which it represents. These facts were known of Phebe M. Bumstead, and are here set down by Albert M. Turner, May 1918."
