Description
Beech wood long gun with break in middle of stock. Original flint lock has been converted to percussion lock. Mark on the barrel, possibly a makers mark, "". Square tang. Butt plate has decorative engravings. Undecorated iron side plate.
Provenance
According to family tradition this rifle was used in the Revolutionary War by George Norton. Family tradition also states that the cut on the stock was made by a sword when Norton held up his rifle to defend himself against a Hessian on horseback . It is reported that the rifle was last used in the 1890s when Mr. Norton's great-great grandsons, Stanley, Philip, and Frederick were allowed to take it squirrel hunting.

This rifle has been documented as almost identical to long rifles made in Goshen, CT by Benoni and Medad Hills.
