It came into the possession of the donor's family, which moved from Boston to South Farms (Morris) in the 1850s. The note mentions that the family lived in the "old Benton Inn," possibly referring to Maplehurst, the resident of Admiral Horatio Benton which later became the South Farms Inn. The donor's father was a civil engineer with experience in mining, and is said to have discovered gold or copper ore in South Farms. The family later moved to Litchfield, where the donor was born. After the donor's two brothers passed away from scarlet fever, the family left Litchfield.
