Description
Square textile fragment with four cut edges and printed design. Off-white ground with sepia and red decoration consisting of oval portraits of George Washington with a ray border and the date "1776". The portrait hangs from a red cartouche featuring a pair of justice scales above an ampersand and the word "peace". The pattern is printed in offset vertical stripes, with curved branches joining the cartouches.
Provenance
Likely made for the Centennial Fair, 1876. Donor purchased fragment from Mrs. Winthrop Gardiner, T. Other House, Morris.
