Description
Three sets of largely handmade paper dolls and clothing items. A - Two ink and watercolor handmade paper dolls cut from card stock. The dolls are shaped like bears and decorated with underwear, socks, and shoes. Dolls are 8.5" tall and 6" wide. Includes 15 watercolor and ink robes and sailor outfits cut from regular paper, 4 sailor caps, 1 winter hat, and 2 full-length pairs of long underwear. B - Two ink and watercolor handmade paper dolls cut from lined paper. The dolls are shaped like dogs or lamps and decorated with underwear, socks, and shoes. The dolls are 8.75" tall and 4.25" wide. Includes 25 watercolor, pencil, and ink dresses and sailor outfits, 2 dressing gowns, 3 sweaters, and 9 hats, all cut from lined or plain paper. C - Two printed paper dolls with watercolor details made from thick paper. The dolls are identical and shaped like children, with one dressed in pink and the other in blue. The dolls are 3.25" high and 1" wide. Includes 9 handmade outfits and 9 handmade individual shoes, all painted in watercolor or decorated in crayon, and either pink, blue, or green. Enclosed in envelope marked "Dick's and Rob's Envelope."
Provenance
Used by Eleanor Babbitt (1898-1994), whose brother married Samuel H. Fisher's daughter. Likely made with the assistance of a nanny or caretaker while Babbitt was in Colorado Springs or New York.
