Description
Necklace and pendant. Oval pendant made from solid gold nugget. Inscribed on one side, "GOLD MINED/BY/G.S. McNEILL/AT/BANNACK/MONTANA." Engraved on reverse with the coat of arms of the McNeill (McNeil) family. Thin chain of gold circular links, double looped.
Provenance
Mined by George Scranton McNeill (1865-1916). Born in Litchfield, George was the son of engineer Edwin McNeil (McNeill) and Emily Dotterer. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, and later became a railroad contractor and gold miner in Montana and California. George is buried in the East Cemetery, Litchfield. Donated to the Society by McNeill's son-in-law and husband of Janet McNeil.
