Description
Glazed earthenware sugar bowl used as a toy or play teaware. A - White ceramic sugar bowl with blue transfer-printed decoration, high-bellied shape, square handles, ribbed or scalloped mold, and four feet. Identical scenes on either side, featuring four children seated by a large urn which holds a cluster of flowers and plants. There is a castle visible to the far right and a boat to the far left. The scene is surrounded by flowers, swags, and acanthus leaves. Molded floral motif on handles and blue geometric border on lip. B - White ceramic lid featuring the same scene and decoration as the bowl. Molded floral motif on single, squared handle. Opening on one side for spoon or sugar tongs.
Provenance
Belonged to Margaret Sargent Fisher, wife of Samuel H. Fisher, who grew up in New Haven in the 1870s-1880s. Later displayed in Babbitt home.
