Description
Circular wooden sign used as a mile marker for the Litchfield Hills Road Race. Sign is made of two circular-cut pieces of wood joined together. The surface of the front layer is painted white, with evidence of a layer of yellow paint underneath. All the lettering and design are done in applied, die-cut vinyl. In black vinyl along top of curve, "LITCHFIELD HILLS" and along bottom, "ROAD RACE," separated by two black dots. Thin black border within lettering. At center, red vinyl circle with shape of "5" cut from center. Holes for attaching the sign just above and below the red circle.
Provenance
This marker (or one extremely similar to it) can be seen in a race photo from 1997. It is possible that markers of this style were used between the 1980s, when the original "snail" markers were removed, until 2006, when the current versions of the "snail" markers were introduced.
