Description
Round bronze metal, silk ribbon and metal pin. Ribbon has red base with rainbow and white stripes. On obverse of medal, relief depicts figure with dress, breastplate and laurel wreath holding one half of a broken sword in each hand. The figure's right foot is resting on a helmet with the sun partially visible in the background. On the left side of the figure is the word "WORLD" and on the right "WAR II". At the base of the figure's left foot is a small inscription "TJ". On the reverse there is a circle of text around the rim that reads "UNITED*STATES*OF*AMERICA*1941*1945". Inside the circle in the center is a palm frond with text above that reads "FREEDOM/FROM FEAR AND WANT" and text below the frond "FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND RELIGION". World War II victory medal.
Provenance
Oswald W. Marrin Jr. (1919-2007) was born in New York City before moving to Litchfield. Graduating from Brown University in 1942, Marrin joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and attended Officer's Class in Quantico, VA. He served as platoon commander and eventually executive officer of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. In his company was Charles R. Hickox, Jr., also of Litchfield. Marrin served in the battles of Guadalcanal, Gloucester, and Peleliu. Discharged as a major in 1946, he returned to Litchfield and ran the Marrin Real Estate Company.
