Description
Large rectangular brass plaque with a single line border engraved around the edges. Three large holes across top and bottom of plaque indicating it was originally mounted to a flat surface. Engraved onto the plaque, "COLONEL BEZALEEL BEEBE/ BORN IN LITCHFIELD APRIL 1741 AND THERE DIED MAY 1824/ EDUCATED FROM EARLY YOUTH IN THE SCHOOL OF INDIAN WARFARE/ IN THE THIRD FRENCH WAR WITH ROGERS RANGERS BEARING ARMS FROM 1759 TO 1763/ IN THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE CAPTAIN OF THE FIRST COMPANY SENT FROM THIS TOWN/ WHICH IN SIX DAYS HE RECRUITED EQUIPPED AND LED TO THE DEFENSE OF NEW YORK/ JANUARY 1776/ CAPTURED WITH THIRTY-SIX PICKED MEN OF LITCHFIELD AT THE SURRENDER OF/ FORT WASHINGTON NOVEMBER 16 1776/ AND WITH THEM IMPRISONED OF WHOM BUT SIX RETURNED ALIVE FROM THEIR CAPTIVITY/ OFFICER IN THE CONNECTICUT LINE FROM 1772 TO 1781/ COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE COAST GUARD FOR THE DEFENSE OF NEW ENGLAND/ WITH A GREAT PRICE OBTAINED WE THIS FREEDOM."
