Description
A-C - Three gold rank insignia pins, World War II era. Gold six-pointed oak leaves with raised branches and veins with small stems at bottom. Denotes rank of major. D - Rectangular cardboard box containing A-C. Lid white with red dot patters and solid red vertical white stripe in center of outward facing side. In center, image of eagle with red lettering inside that reads "H*H". Below eagle, red lettering "TRADE MARK REG." On left edge of box, white paper label with black lettering: "Lt. CCMDR. OR/ MAJOR SHIRT/CLUTCH G.F.". On inside of box, red lettering "HILBORN-HAMBURGER INC./ NEW YORK, N.Y./ + +/ MFRS. MILITARY INSIGNIA". In bottom right, red label with gold lettering and gold border "THE QUALITY OF THIS/ GOLD FILLED ARTICLE/ IS GUARANTEED TO BE/ IN STRICT ACCORDANCE"WITH THE COMMERCIAL/ - STANDARDS C.S./ AS ISSUED BY THE U.S./ DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE/ AND APPROVED BY THE/ AMERICAN STANDARDS ASS'N". Base of box is solid white with marron colored velvet inlay in which a-c are set, as well as a rectangular red label with gold border and lettering "1/20 - 10KT./ GOLD FILLED". On bottom of base, white label with black lettering "C1I5/ I01 273/$I.25".
Provenance
Oswald W. Marrin Jr. (1919-2007) was born in New York City before moving to Litchfield. Graduating from Brown University in 1942, Marrin joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and attended Officer's Class in Quantico, VA. He served as platoon commander and eventually executive officer of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. In his company was Charles R. Hickox, Jr., also of Litchfield. Marrin served in the battles of Guadalcanal, Gloucester, and Peleliu. Discharged as a major in 1946, he returned to Litchfield and ran the Marrin Real Estate Company.
