Description
Oil on wood board portrait of John Russel Landon (1765-1851). Half-length portrait of a middle-aged man, seated in upholstered chair at a desk or table, against a dark background with chestnut-colored drapery. Man wears a dark suit with narrow lapels and a white, ruffled necktie. The man has gray eyes and thinning, light brown hair; shadow of facial hair on upper lip and chin, with sideburns extending just below ear. The man holds a writing quill in his right hand and a piece of paper under his left, with several lines of illegible writing. Multiple leather-bound volumes are visible in the background behind his right shoulder. The man is facing slightly left. The portrait board is cradled and set in reproduction giltwood frame.

Comment
Born in Salisbury, John Russel Landon served as High Sheriff of Litchfield County from 1801 to 1818. He married Anna Champion of Litchfield. Four of their daughters attended the Litchfield Female Academy. The couple later moved to Castleton, Vermont, where they were likely painted by Abraham Tuthill.
