Description
Oil on canvas portrait of Dr. Manly Peters attributed to Ammi Phillips, in reproduction frame. Man faces left and sits on a red chair holding an open book entitled "Materia Medica." He wears a black coat with turned down collar, black vest and tie, and white shirt. Part of pocket watch is visible with ornate clock key fob.
Provenance
At the time of donation, the companion portraits of Hannah Griswold and Manly Peters were attributed to Ammi Phillips. They appear as "Lady in Cap" (223) and "Man with Turned Down Collar" (222) in the chronological list of portraits in Black and Holdridge, "Ammi Phillips: Portrait Painter 1788-1865." Multiple parties have questioned the Phillips attribution upon viewing the paintings.
Comment
Son of Eber Peters and Catherine McCollum. Born March 11, 1799, died October 12, 1863. Attended Yale College and graduated from Pittsfield Medical School in 1826. Practiced in Milton for ten years. Member of the Litchfield County Medical Society and fellow of the CT Medical Society. .
