Description
Six foreign coins, varied denominations and origins. All six were originally taped together in a paper enclosure, with handwritten note, "D/O/You can get familiar with these/so that you will know them/when you go to the different countries/J" I - 25 centimes, France, 1925; J - 5 centimes, France, 1925; K - 20 centesimi, Italy, 1919; L - 10 centesimi, Italy, 1926; M - 5 centesimi, Italy, 1930; N - Half penny, Great Britain, 1915.
Provenance
Donated with personal effects of Oswald W. Marrin Jr. Marrin (1919-2007) was born in New York City before moving to Litchfield. Graduating from Brown University in 1942, Marrin joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and attended Officer's Class in Quantico, VA. He served as platoon commander and eventually executive officer of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. In his company was Charles R. Hickox, Jr., also of Litchfield. Marrin served in the battles of Guadalcanal, Gloucester, and Peleliu. Discharged as a major in 1946, he returned to Litchfield and ran the Marrin Real Estate Company.

Found in portable writing desk, 2017-19-71a. "D/O" is likely shorthand for "Dear Ozzie" or "Dear Oswald"; "J" possibly refers to Jean, his mother. The enclosure is stored in the accession file.
