Description
Banjo made by the John C. Haynes Co., a division of the Oliver Ditson Co. Chrome-plated brass tension hoop and pot with 24 brackets, maple internal rim, and calf skin head. Five-string tailpiece at end, wooden bridge attached to calk skin head near tailpiece. Mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, 22 frets and 8 mother of pearl inlays (one missing) in star and cross shapes. Ebony heel cap and headstock. One ivory peg at 18th fret, four others at headstock. Mother of pearl inlay at center of headstock, in shape of star. Four gut strings (two of them broken), one steel string. Gold painted label on back of headstock, black lettering,"BAY STATE." Carved maker's mark on wooden dowel stick behind head, "BAY STATE/315 X/JOHN C. HAYNES CO./BOSTON."
