Description
Round bronze medal with silk rainbow ribbon. On obverse of medal, raised relief of winged angel wearing toga, breast plate and wreath with one arm outstretched and the other holding a branch. At base, small inscription that reads: "W. McM". On reverse, circular wreath border with lettering in center that reads: THE GREAT/ *WAR FOR*/CIVILISATION/1914-1919/*********". Inscription along rim reads "Capt. J.O. Taylor". World War I Victory Medal.
Provenance
Oswald W. Marrin Jr. (1919-2007) was born in New York City before moving to Litchfield. Graduating from Brown University in 1942, Marrin joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and attended Officer's Class in Quantico, VA. He served as platoon commander and eventually executive officer of K Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. In his company was Charles R. Hickox, Jr., also of Litchfield. Marrin served in the battles of Guadalcanal, Gloucester, and Peleliu. Discharged as a major in 1946, he returned to Litchfield and ran the Marrin Real Estate Company.
Comment
When designing their victory medals the rainbow ribbon was shared by all victorious nations, but the medal design itself was left up to the individual countries. This is the British version of the medal.
