Description
Glazed earthenware teapot used as a toy or play teaware. A - Off-white ceramic teapot with brown transfer-printed decoration. Low-bellied with rounded rectangular base, squared handle, and curved spout. Identical landscape scene on either side featuring two pagodas with a river or lake in front; a man rows a boat on the water, on which is a child with a fishing net and a woman in a black dress and hat. A partition and walkway cross the water in front of the boat. The lip of the pot features an alternating pattern of pagodas and geometric motifs with flower clusters, with a geometric border above. The handle and spout feature the same geometric motif with flower clusters. Six holes in the wall of teapot allow the tea to pass through the spout. B - Off-white ceramic lid with brown transfer-printed decoration and rectangular knob. Alternating pagoda scenes and geometric motifs with flower clusters around rim, with a geometric border above. Small hole on one side.
Provenance
Belonged to Margaret Sargent Fisher, wife of Samuel H. Fisher, who grew up in New Haven in the 1870s-1880s. Later displayed in Babbitt home.
