Description
Embroidered and appliquéd quilted banner. Banner comprised of four blue and tan blocks: a tree in crescent moon with waves and clouds; a globe with seven stick figures holding hands; five animals arranged in a circle (bird, frog, turtle, fish, and horse); and a dove holding laurel in its beak, with lettering, "MONTESSORI/EDUCATION FOR PEACE." Multi-colored floral calico border and backing, with batting between the layers. Quilted banner is tied with blue thread. Handwritten label on reverse, at bottom left: "March 1989/Jay Gandhi/Jonah Spear/Claudia Maas/Sylva Zander." Five fabric handing loops attached at top of banner.

Made by students at the Litchfield Montessori School in Northfield.
Comment
Donor served on the board of the Litchfield Montessori School for 12 years, including six as president. During that time, the board negotiated the purchase of the Marcel Breuer-designed school building from the town of Litchfield and oversaw the construction of an addition.
