Description
Tin cream can (a) or milk can with wood stopper (b). Cylindrical body with flat bottom, rounded shoulders, and cylindrical neck. Short, round handle on one side; attached to can at top of neck and base of shoulders. Small stamp on handle, possibly "CC." On reverse side from handle is a brass nameplate with stamped lettering, "ECHO FARM/LITCHFIELD CONN." Solder lines visible at all seams and around nameplate. Round wood stopper inserted into neck opening.
Provenance
F. Ratchford Starr bought land in East Litchfield in 1869, and kept a herd of purebred Jerseys. Echo Farm became the first dairy enterprise in the U.S. to commercially bottle and distribute milk, shipping to New York daily from a private ice house. The dairy opened a nearby creamery and gave public tours. The farm was purchased in 1910 by H.S. Chase of Waterbury, becoming Echo Chase Farm.
