Description
Oil on canvas painting of Eric Stowe Hatch, aged about seven. 3/4 length portrait of a young boy, sitting, with light brown hair wearing a white sailor suit with blue accents. He is facing the viewer with his legs crossed. The background is dark, with wicker on the right and light fabric on the left.
Provenance
Inherited by Hatch's son who hung the portrait in his home for many years.
Comment
Eric Stowe Hatch (1902-1973), the well-known novelist and scriptwriter, is depicted here at seven years old. Born in New York, he served in the Second World War and was a staff writer for the New Yorker before moving to Litchfield in 1954. He owned and operated WBIS radio station with Edna Constance Hatch, his wife, and in 1963 he conceived of the First Litchfield Artillery Regiment. He was later named chairman of both the Connecticut Historical Commission and the American Bicentennial Commission of Connecticut. John Wycliffe Lowes Forster (1850-1938) was a Canadian painter known for his portraits, active from 1869 until his death. The museum holds four other of his works.
