Description
Copy of the portrait of Rev. Truman Marsh by Ralph Earl. Small oval watercolor, very similar to original portrait - style and technique is naive. Evidence of pencil drawing underneath. The image is of a young man in his ministerial robe, holding a large book with a tall bookcase with red curtain in the background.
Provenance
This painting descended in the Marsh family and was donated by a descendant.
Comment
Ralph Earl painted all of Moses Seymour's family, including his daughter and son-in-law. Truman Marsh was born in 1768 in Litchfield, CT and died in 1851. Son of Ebenezer and Lucy (Phelps) Marsh, he graduate Yale in 1786. On Oct. 27, 1791 he married his first cousin Clarissa Seymour, daughter of Major Moses Seymour.
