Description
Serving spoon made by Miles Beach, a Litchfield silversmith, for Thomas Catlin, Jr. Silver spoon with deep, oblong bowl and narrow stem that widens toward handle. Rounded terminal, curving upward. Engraved on back of handle, "T/C/A"; maker's mark on back of stem, "M.BEACH" in rectangular stamp.
Provenance
Handwritten note, copied from "Grandma Catlin's" book, describes the object as one of the "silver spoons belonging to Thomas Catlin, Jr., Tru's great grandfather, said to have been made from eighteen silver dollars. Lt. Thomas Catlin, Jr. was taken prisoner at New York in 1777. His wife was Avis Buell and they were married on December 25, 1763."
Comment
Thomas Catlin, Jr. (1737-1829) served as a lieutenant in the Litchfield company commanded by Captain Abraham Bradley during the American Revolution. He served from June to September, 1776, when he was taken prisoner by the British during the retreat from New York. He was returned to Connecticut in 1777 as part of a prisoner exchange, and later served on a Litchfield County committee to purchase and provide clothing to the Continental Army.
