Description
Oil on wood board portrait of Anna Champion Landon (1763-1849). Half-length portrait of a middle-aged woman, seated in upholstered chair, set against dark background with dark red drapery. Woman wears a plain, chestnut-colored dress, tied with a red cord under the chest to create a high waistline. Sleeve ruffle visible on her right hand, which class a leather-bound volume; her left hand is tucked underneath. Large, ruffled collar of white lace with an oval brooch pinned underneath; the brooch appears to be a large amber-colored stone set in gold with a border of small white stones. The woman has blue-gray eyes and light brown hair, which is styled in short curls underneath a white cap with lace edging and large bow. An earring is visible in her right ear, and matches the brooch. The woman is facing slightly right. The portrait board is cradled and set in reproduction giltwood frame.
Provenance
Descended in the family of the sitter to donor.
Comment
Daughter of the Reverend Judah Champion, Anna Champion married John Russel Landon in 1796. Landon served as High Sheriff of Litchfield County from 1801 to 1818. Four of their daughters attended the Litchfield Female Academy. The couple later moved to Castleton, Vermont, where they were likely painted by Abraham Tuthill.
