Description
Dress uniform jacket, World War II era. Dark, olive green wool twill, single-breasted with lapels. Brass buttons down center front and on pockets, featuring seal of United States; manufactured by Scovill Manufacturing Co., Waterbury, Connecticut. Double patch pockets at chest and waist. Epaulet on each shoulder with button and flight officer insignia (metal pin with gold border, blue enamel interior and single gold stripe). Long sleeves with braid and Army Air Force insignia patch on left-upper sleeve (blue felt circle with winged star, wings completed in metallic thread). Army Air Force officer brass on lapels (two sets of pins, one "US" and one with winged propeller). Metal pilot badge (silver, winged shield) above left patch pocket. Center-back pleat. Lining of dark, olive green silk. Interior chest pocket on right side with woven label showing logo and text "KAHN TAILORING CO./OF INDIANAPOLIS/The kind of clothes/Gentlemen Wear/KAHN CLOTHES/MADE TO MEASURE/REG. US./PAT. OFF." Belt in matching fabric with loop and rectangular brass buckle.
Provenance
Saveno J. Sileno, of Torrington, entered a cadet training program in 1943 at the age of 18. His basic training and flight training took him to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, and Alabama. His class, 44J, received flight wings and Flight Officer commissions in October 1944. He spent several months training on the P-47 Thunderbolt and waiting for foreign assignment, up to the conclusion of World War II in 1945. Sileno was a longtime resident of Litchfield.
