Description
Watercolor on ivory portrait miniature of Frederick Deming (1873-1892). Head-and-shoulders portrait of an older boy wearing a charcoal suit with matching vest, a white shirt with straight collar, and a lilac pleated cravat. Boy has brown hair combed to the right, and brown eyes. Facing front against a background of grey and brown. Oval portrait set in brass locket under convex glass, with loop at top. Signed above sitter's left shoulder, "C.P. NEWELL, 1913."
Provenance
Donated by a descendant of the Deming family of Litchfield.
Comment
Donor's family attributed the portrait as Frederick Deming, who died 20 years before Newell painted this miniature. Given the sitter's dress, it is likely that Newell was working off of an older portrait or photograph (done when Frederick was still alive).
