Description
Carved soapstone inkwell, probably from East Litchfield soapstone reserves. Square shape, top with large central hole for ink, and four smaller holes at each corner to hold quills. Made by George Buell (1804), of Litchfield, son of Abagail (Bush) and Jonathan Buell. Made for his sisters, carved with their initials on each side: "M B" (Maria or Marian) "RB AB" (twins: Abbe and Racheal) and "H H" (unknown) and "_ B" unknown
Comment
There are several examples of these soapstone inkwells in the LHS collection. The soapstone was local, East Litchfield, and hence probably a common source for making local inkwells.
