Description
Empire style sideboard. Mahogany veneer. Flat top with attached backboard. Backboard meets at peak in center. Column on each side of board of vase shaped acanthus leaves with grooved finial on top. Column down each side of front of piece ending in large hairy paw foot. Two cabinet doors hinged on outer edges with brass key hole plate. Two shelves in each cabinet. Three drawers in center of sideboard. Progressively taller from top to bottom. Bottom drawer deep enough to hold bottles. Bottom drawer has brass key hole cover. Each drawer has two large brass drawer pulls - round, pressed floral design with circular shaped drop pull.
Comment
The sideboard was commissioned by Ruloff Dutcher, (1780-1851) a Canaan businessman in 1821. He married Lucinda Howe (1787-1874) and they had a daughter, Elizabeth Sheldon Dutcher (1825-1867) who married Francis Bacon, the son of Asa Bacon and Lucretia Champion. Francis and Elizabeth had one daughter Katherine Bacon who married Thomas Rutherford Trowbridge.
