This chair was owned by Francis P. Garvan, noted American antique collector. In the late 1920s and early 1930s Francis P. Garvan was integral in aiding the Litchfield Historical Society in setting up a house museum when the Tapping Reeve House was acquired by the organization. Helping to secure items such as old paneling and wallpaper during restoration work, Mr. Garvan also loaned furnishings to the society, and when the house opened to the public the majority of the furniture, including this windsor chair, was on loan from Mr. Garvan himself. Mr. Garvan and his wife later donated thousands of objects to the Yale University Art Gallery.
