Description
Oil on canvas portrait, rectangular 1/2 length image of portly middle aged man, seated in red upholstered armchair facing slightly to the left. Gray hair, side burns and brown eyes. Wearing a black suit, yellow vest, white pleated shirt and black tie. His arm rests on arm of chair, in right hand he holds a folded document: "Quarterly Report/of the/Dep. Supt. of Police/July 31st/1858" To the left a table with gray felt cover, two books, one on top "Laws of New York" and in open case atop books, a badge of the police.
Comment
Frederick Augustus Tallmadge (1792-1869) the son of Benjamin Tallmadge, was born in Litchfield. He graduated from Yale in 1811, attended the Litchfield Law School in 1811. He married Elizabeth Canfield of Sharon, CT, a Litchfield Female Academy student, in 1815. Admitted to the bar in 1811. He practiced law in NYC, was a soldier in War of 1812-1814; New York Senate 1837-40; Recorder for City of NY 1841-46 and 1848-51; Congressman from NY 1847-49; Superintendent of Metropolitan Police 1857-62; Clerk of Court of Appeals of NY 1862-65. Died while visiting Litchfield in 1869.
