Description
Portrait miniature - older man, balding with wisps of curly hair on the sides and back of his head and light brown or green eyes. He is wearing a black jacket with high collar at back of neck, white shirt, and white cravat tied around his neck. Man has serious expression. Background is a creamy-pink color with a hint of brown in the bottom-right corner. Framed in ornate giltwood frame.

SITTER: Frederick Wolcott was the son of Oliver Wolcott, Sr. He attended the Litchfield Law School. On October 12, 1800 he married Elizabeth "Betsey" Huntington. They lived in the Oliver Wolcott house on South St. across from the Tapping Reeve House. ARTIST: Born in Milton, a village in the town of Litchfield, Anson Dickinson began advertising himself as a miniature painter in 1802. He traveled to New York in 1804, where he was painted by Edward Greene Malbone, the leading American miniaturist of his day. Dickinson painted over 1,500 miniatures over the course of fifty years, traveling as far as Canada and South Carolina to paint. He kept a studio in New York for a period, and returned frequently to Litchfield where he painted prominent residents and students of the Female Academy and Law School.
