Description
Twelve sided wooden apple tray. Tray is painted red, brown, and gold. Outer side of bowl is decorated with pasted on paper cupids. Interior of bowl decorated with pasted on paper images, many relating to The Odd Fellows. Bottom of piece is inscribed with "Made by David C. Bulkley/ when he was Seventy Six years old/ Sept. 1880 D.C. Bulkley./ Let some one of the Bulkleys keep this/ D.C. Bulkley." Inscription is handwritten in pencil by the maker. David C. Bulkley was born in Wethersfield, CT in 1805. As a child his parents, David and Elizabeth Flint Bulkley, moved the family to Litchfield. As an adult David C. Bulkley spent his lifetime working as a cabinetmaker in Litchfield. He was in partnersihps with George Dewey from 1832 to 1839, and Virgillus G. Cooke in 1839. He ran his own furniture ware house in 1849. Bulkley married twice during his lifetime, and his family resided on Meadow Street in Litchfield. His first marriage was to Mary Ann Stoddard on May 2, 1831. After Mary Ann's death in 1847, Bulkley married Harriet Abigial Miller on April 12, 1848. David C. Bulkley was also involved in the community, and was a member of the Columbian Lodge, No. 35 of The Odd Fellows in Litchfield.
