Description
Oil painting of George Washington, reverse painting on glass. Black background. Head and upper torso - wearing white powdered wig, black jacket, white cravat, lace front piece to shirt. He has a stern expression - painting has slightly cartoonish apperance. Framed in wooden frame painted gold with two small iron rings at top of frame for hanging.
Comment
According to the accession folder this painting was done in China in the early years of the China trade for sale in America. It is believed the Chinese painter copied the portrait from a lithograph of the Gilbert Stuart portrait of Washington.
