Description
A. Miniature: Oval bust-length portrait painting, watercolor on ivory. Sitter facing slightly left. Tallmadge has short grey hair, wears Continental Army uniform--deep-blue coat with red lapels on a shaded green field. Frame: Oval with heavy gold foil border, case with bright-cut work on front. B. Case--green leather with silk lining, stamped hinges.
Provenance
Believed to have been painted shortly after the occupation of New York by American forces in 1783, at which point Ramage was living in the city. Tallmadge, elected a member of the Society of the Cincinnati after the organization formed in 1783, is not depicted wearing the Society's medal on his lapel. Ramage included the medal when painting Society members from 1784 onwards.
