Description
Brown cardboard box with blue silk lining, top in gold letters on cover "The Washington Centennial Medal 1889", at bottom "Authorized by the Committee designed by A. St. Gaudens" Bronze medal, smooth edged, smooth rim, matte finish. 13 stars around edge. "George Washington" at top. In center is a left facing bust profile with faces at left, "PATER PATRIAE/MCDDLXXXIX" across middle. On back side 38 stars around reverse, eagle with shield and motto at top, city of New York shield at lower left. Inscription "TO COMMEMORATE/THE INAUGURATION/OF GEORGE WASHINGTON AS FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE/UNITED STATES OF AMERICA/AT NEW YORK APRIL XXX/MDCCLXXXIX/BY AUTHORITY OF THE COMMITTEE/ON CELEBRATION/NEW YORK APRIL/XXX/MDCCLXXXIX"
