Description
Bust portrait, oval on rectangular canvas. Young man facing right. Blond/grey hair in Dutch style cut with bangs and blue eyes. He wears a blue coat with triangular lapels, double breasted vest, and a high double collar. Frame has molded gold edge with inset of gilded beads.
Provenance
Attributed to Richard Jennys (stylistically). In 18th-century (period) frame, likely English imported. Frame has been cut down to fit.
Comment
Son of Col. Samuel & Elizabeth (Ruggles) Canfield. Brother of Judge Judson Canfield. In business w/ brother Ithamar, Asher was a merchant in New Milford until 1794, when he moved to NYC. In 1820, he settled in Montevideo, Uruguay as a cattle rancher.
