Description
White piece of paper with four pieces of linen sewn to it - 2 red, 1 white and 1 blue. Top of paper reads "Pieces of First Secession Flag to be Hauled Down" Underneath three pieces is an explanation of event. "Pieces of First Secession flag to be to be hauled down, May 24, 1861, from Marshall House, Alexandria, VA by Elmer E. Ellsowrth, Colonel, commanding the New York regiment of Firemen's Zouaves at which time he was murdered by John W. Jackson, proprieter of Marshall House who was immediately killed by Francis E. Brownell of Company A of the Firemen's Zoaves." The bottom of the letter is signed "George F. Nesbitt" Secretary of the Firemen's Zoaves Fund.
