Oil on canvas portrait of Mrs. John Brisbane, (Mary Susan Preston) (1793-1859). 1/2 length image of older woman seated in upholstered red chair, facing left. wearing a black dress with white net fichu, a white net bonnet with long ties held at the throat by an enamel pin. Brown hair parted in the middle, pale brown eyes.
Comment
Mary Susan Preston (1793-1859) was born in the West Indies, the daughter of Governor Preston of South Carolina and the granddaughter of Commodore Alexander Gillon of Charleston. She grew up in Charleston, SC. Married Mr. John Brisbane, the Brisbane's were a Charleston family. The portrait painter, George Wright (1828-1881) was a native of Washington, CT. Was the custodian of the Wadsworth Atheneum in 1847, he studied abroad and at the National Academy, successful portrait painter in Hartford. He was an alcoholic and was found dead in a gutter in Hartford in 1881.
