Description
Cardboard box in two pieces, covered in navy blue paper, large paper label on top piece reads: "M. Heminway & Sons Silk Co./Art Needlework Wash Silks/Permanent Oriental Dyes/Mills: Watertown, Conn." Top opens to 12 vertical compartments, each holding several skeins and strands of different colored needlework silks. Arranged according to color. Total: 8 bound full skeins and 208 individual loose skeins.
Comment
Merritt Heminway established the silk manufacturing company in 1849. In 1855 his four sons and one daughter joined the firm, "M. Heminway & Sons," and in 1860 the firm was known as "M. Heminway & Sons Silk Co." In 1900, after Merritt's death c. 1890, another partner, Bartlett was taken on and it was known as "Heminway & Bartlett."
