Description
This is a cube of iron cut from one of the 800 links of the great chain which stretched across the Hudson River at West Point during the Revolutionary War. Each link weighed approximately 115 lbs and was forged at Sterling Furnace in New York's Ramapo Mountains. The chain was supported on log rafts and designed to block the passage of British naval vessels up the Hudson, was installed on April 30, 1778 and never broken. Complete chain links may be seen at Hartford, Newport, Morristown, Albany and West Point.
