Description
Quilted coverlet, whole cloth coverlet in red copper plate printed linen of a scene from the Odyssey "Telemachus and Mentor, Shipwrecked, Arriving at the Island of Calypso." Three vertical sections of cloth sewn together to create body of quilt. Border prints of roller printed floral cotton chintz, diamond pattern quilting overall. Quilt is baced with plain linen.
Comment
The border patterns originally had another layer of printed cottons above them, dating to the 1840's, indicating that the quilt was later reworked, but probably originally made c. 1800.
