Description
Gold beaded necklace - partially double strand. Beads are strung on a braided linen strand. There is a rectangular gold clasp with a gold spring clasp. On one side is engraved "D. Champion. 1774" and on the reverse side "L.D. to E.H.P"
Comment
The necklace was given to Dorothy Champion in 1774 by her father Col. Henry Champion of East Haddam. He promised to bring her a string of beads if he sold a pair of bulls, Buck and Bright for more than a certain sum, which he did. Lucretia Deming, daughter of Dorothy Champion and Julius Deming gave these beads to her nieve Edith Howell Perkins (Mrs. William Woodville Rockhill)
