Description
Oval cap with inward sloping sides, flat top and brim folded up on sides but not in front or back; crown made of white material and brim dark blue; around base of crown is a 1 1/2" band made of dark blue cotton with a gold ribbon along top side; in front, gold leaves are embroidered on the band and a tall piece has an eagle with a sheild embroidered in silver; interior lined with black silk, except for the center which is white and plastic

Belonged to Col. Raymond's sister Cmdr Grace Alison (Raymond) Lanier, who was one of the early WAVES officer candidates in 1942. While on duty in Cape May, NJ Naval Air Station, she developed a program of rehabilitation for hospital patients. This program was instituted by the entire Navy in WWII. Mrs. Lanier attained the rank of Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves after the war. She was the first woman officer to publish an article in the official professional journal "U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings"
