Description
Black flag officer visor cap belonging to Rear Admiral Charles L. Hussey. Circular shape with felt top and straight sides covered in black canvas strip. In front, flat, black velvet visor with gold metallic fretting; some of the gold color missing from metallic thread. Gold strap running across base of hat attaches on either side of visor with gold buttons showing naval officer's emblem. In center of hat, emblem of eagle standing on shield set in front of crossed anchors, all done in metallic thread of gold, silver, and black. Black leather on bottom of visor with brown leather along sides and black silk lining on top. Stamped on diamond-shaped plastic label, "THE HORSTMANN UNIFORM CO./PHILADELPHIA."
Provenance
Charles Lincoln Hussey (1870-1934) served in the Navy from 1892 to 1927, after attending the Naval Academy between 1888 and 1892. Born in Rochester, NH and died in Litchfield, CT. Awarded the Navy Cross for his command during WWI, in which he transported troops and supplies to European ports on board the U.S.S. Birmingham. Retired as a Rear Admiral, a position he attained sometime after 1920. Married Harriet Brownson, daughter of Rear Admiral Willard H. Brownson, later Superintendent of the Naval Academy.
