Description
Depicts a man leaning on a rock with his arms crossed and a walking stick under his left arm. He faces left and is wearing a broad-brimmed hat with high conical crown. Grey hair, long. Ruddy face. Dark blue coat, open pleated shirt front. Engraved on back, "John Williams Quincy/of Boston/Born February 19, 1769/Died January 20, 1834/coat of arms/Painted from the original (1788)/for his granddaughter/Mary Perkins Quincy/1893." Signed at bottom, "J. Stokes."
Comment
An overmantel of the same portrait is in the collection, accession number 1974-11-0. Both were copied from a painting of John Williams Quincy by Henry Sargent, c.1788. Mary Perkins Quincy had Stokes copy the original portrait in 1893.
