Description
Four tier capital surgical set with wooden case with brass fittings. Plaque on lid of case engraved "USA Medical Department". Interior of the case lined with red velvet and contains several medical instruments including a capital saw, liston knives, forceps, tenaculum, trephines, hey saw, and catheterization tools.
Comment
This capital surgical set was used by Dr. Charles Squire Wood during the American Civil War during his time with the United States Volunteer Army. According to his wife it was presented to him by the U.S. government in recognition of his eminent skill in surgery. Dr. Wood was born in Litchfield in 1825 in house a on North Street. He is buried in West Cemetery.
