Object Number

Description
Textile fragment containing wool motifs appliqued to white silk. The motifs are worked in black wool and are meant to resemble engravings. There are ten motifs in total: monkey, rabbit and deer, dog, lion under a plum tree, stork, bird in flight, worm, butterfly, and pomegranate and pear branches. The motifs were either purchased or cut from an embroidered piece.
Provenance
The accession record indicates the piece may be English in origin, and dates from the 17th century. The piece was originally mounted on a square piece of oak with tacks, probably in the 18th century. At some point it was framed under glass. The silk deteriorated and came loose of the board, after which it was back with a new mounting board. It has since been removed.
