Description
Female doll with ceramics (bisque) head and torso. Painted face with red cheeks, black lines for eyebrows and eyelashes. Left eye of white glass with black center, right eye and mouth missing. Arms sewn on at mid-torso, possibly as a repair. Arms and legs are wooden covered with padding and cotton fabric. Legs attached to ceramic torso at hips with string. Doll wears a silk skirt with cotton slip. Torso wrapped in printed cotton toile of floral patterns in red, green, blue, yellow, and white. Head covered in colorful knitted wool bonnet with silk tie around neck.
Provenance
Doll was found in the Asahel Bacon house in Roxbury, CT. A note donated with the doll identifies its owner as Mary (Maryann) Bacon Whittlesey, a student at the Litchfield Female Academy in 1802.
