Description
Rectangular marking sampler with black, beige, and light blue silk embroidery on brown linen ground. Border of repeating chevron pattern in black thread, surrounding lines of embroidered letters, numbers, and decorative motifs. Sampler begins with an uppercase alphabet, followed by a lowercase and a second uppercase (different style); each line is separated by a horizontal border in of of the three colors. Embroidery color changes every three letters, following a pattern of black-beige-blue-lighter beige. At bottom, single row of numbers (1-10) with baskets or urns and floral designs. In blue embroidery at right, "Aged 11/Years" and at very bottom, "Elisabeth H. Wheeler" in blue embroidery with the letters "E", "H", and "W" done in larger letters with more complex stitching. Set between glass with simple wood frame.
Provenance
Object obtained from the estate of Fernie Hunt, the grandson of Elizabeth Wheeler (maker of this sampler) and John F. Williamson. The Wheeler family had a farm on Hutchison Parkway in Litchfield. Hunt worked as a manager at the Litchfield Electric Light and Power Company. His father, George Hunt, was a town clerk and secretary at Echo Farm.
