Description
Rectangular marking sampler with black, blue, red, beige, and green silk embroidery on off-white or brown linen ground. Border of cross-stitched black "x" marks with chevron pattern inside. Sampler begins with uppercase alphabet, followed by a lowercase alphabet and the numbers 0-9. It is then marked "Esther Sanf/ord Aged 8 Years/Litchfield August 1812. The sampler continues with a verse, "What tho' the canva[s]/charm the eye Soon/ must these coulors/fade and die But to/the immortal mind/must live And the/dread wreck of time/survive Here then/your youthful time/improve All that is/good admire and love/To God your earliest/homage pay And treat/the path to endless day." At bottom is a second uppercase alphabet. Border is missing or possible incomplete at bottom. Framed under glass; dark stained wood frame with gilt liner.
